Christian Mayne
Our Award winning DJ and founder of the Fat Poppadaddys sound is a man with a record collection that takes up half his house (and a CD collection that takes up the other half).
Having been DJing since a teenager in the (early) 80s, Christian has DJed in virtually every city you can name and DJed along side most of the DJs you can name as well, including Gilles Peterson (before he was famous), Dave Pearce (God knows how they ended on the same bill), Steve Lamacq, and even Shaun Ryder & Finley Quaye. He’s played on the same stage as De La Soul, JTQ and Roni Size. And if his colleagues sound eclectic, that’s because Christian’s DJ style is…well…eclectic too, and has been since before the days when eclectic was THE watchword for DJs.
Don’t be too suprised to hear Dolly Parton, Simon & Garfunkel or The Ebony Dubsters alongside The Rolling Stones, The Arctic Monkeys or Stevie Wonder mixed up over some other old funk tunes with a loop you recognise but can’t place while you’re still trying to find a comfortable spot on the always rammed dancefloor!
Often copied, but most imitators just don’t quite get it, as the NME put it “Holy Fuck!”
You’ll find Christian playing at Secret Discotheque every Thursday at The Place, Cambridge.
